Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS FENCING?
Fencing is one of the last original sports of the Modern Olympics. Steeped in the romance of the age of dueling, fencing has evolved into one of the fastest sports on earth. There are three weapons: foil, epee and sabre. At Beaches Sabre Club we deal strictly with sabre, the most dynamic of the three.

WHAT IS SABRE?
Sabre is an evolution of the cavalry weapon. Unlike the other two, sabre uses a slashing motion to score points (like the swashbucklers of the movies). Since the calvary was on horseback and horses were considered valuable prizes, men in battle would aim above the waist of their enemy so that they wouldnt damage the horse accidentally. We keep this target today anything above the waist, including the head, is valid target.

IS FENCING DANGEROUS?
Fencing has a minimal amount of risk involved if practiced properly. Proper protection is provided by BSC-NY. This includes a glove, mask and jacket. The sabre is not sharp so touches will not break the skin. Bruises, however, will arise. Of most sports practiced by children fencing has one of the fewest injury records. We do stress safety in all our classes and are happy to report that we have never had a serious injury by any of our students.

DO I HAVE TO COMPETE?
NO! BSC-NY has a strong recreational membership. Since fencing is such a great way to work out there are many students who come just to work off stress and as a form of exercise. However, if you do develop a wish to compete our club has one of the best winning percentages at national competitions.

ARE THERE SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES?
Fencing is not only a great sport but it is also an NCAA recognized sport. There are full and part scholarship opportunities at most major colleges and universities. Ivy League schools are on record for encouraging applicants who list fencing as an activity. For a list of Colleges and Universities which have fencing programs please Click Here

DO I HAVE TO SIGN UP RIGHT AWAY?
People are welcome to stop in and watch any of our classes or our competitions. At BSC-NY we offer a free introduction as well. If you decide to try it out you are welcome to come in and take your first class for free.
